Now, we are going to begin digging through the cultural artifacts that we ourselves will one day leave behind.

  • First, take a look at the images included below, and again, choose one that speaks to you.

  • Now that you have selected an artifact, take fifteen to twenty minutes to come up with a story behind this object, once again perhaps considering some of the prompts we used in the previous lesson to aid you.

  • Again, gather together either as a class or in small groups and share the stories that you came up with for these objects.

Was it easier or harder to come up with a story for these objects compared to the artifacts from the previous lesson? Why is that?

When we look at these contemporary artifacts, there is an immediate recognition of what they are and what they mean. Hopefully through this exerice, you see that cultural artifacts are not limited to things from long ago, on view at the museum, but also include things being creating here and now. I'd like to leave you with one final question for you to think about,

what will people think about the things we leave behind?

Now you have a little homework assignment, but before you panic, know that it only involves thinking, no writing or reading. I'd like for you to go home tonight and think about all the objects that you use on a daily basis, but more than that, I want you to think about the stories that these objects tell. I want you to pick two or three that have special meaning for you. Keep in mind that these objects need to be something that we can make on a 3D printer, so things that involve fabric, like clothing, may not be a practical idea for this exploration, but perhaps a piece of jewelery like a ring or brooch might be a good idea. You do not need to come to any definitive decisions yet, as the next lesson will introduce you to the 3D design program we will be using, and after that you will have a better idea of what you can and can't do with a 3D printer, but I just want to get those wheels in your mind turning.
